The testing procedure measures the bone density of the bones of the spine, two norms - healthy young adults (your T-score) and age-matched (your Z-score). 29 May 2018 Current osteoporosis medications increase bone density and reduce the calculation of Z-scores to adjust for an expected decrease in fracture

The test can measure bone density at your hip and lumbar spine. What does the test do? The T-score; World Health Organization

A BMD test measures your bone mineral density and compares it to that of an established norm or standard to give you a score. Although no bone density test is 100-percent accurate, the BMD test is an important predictor of whether a person will have a fracture in the future. Bone Density Z-Score. The osteoporosis Z-score, on the other hand, represents a woman's bone density results in comparison to a person of her age, sex, weight, and ethnicity. If one's Z-score is abnormally skewed, this could represent an external factor aside from aging that is causing atypical bone loss. The Z-score is a comparison of a person's bone density with that of an average person of the same age and sex. Lower scores (more negative) mean lower bone density: A T-score of -2.5 or lower The scores presented on your bone density test results consists of two numbers: a T-Score and Z-score, both expressed in standard deviations from the mean, or average. The T-score is a comparison of your results to a healthy young adult age 20-35, while the Z-score is a comparison between you and a person of the same gender and same age as Z-score: Z-score is the measure of the density of a person’s bone in comparison to what’s expected in a person of equivalent age, sex, and size. The Z-score is the number of standard deviations away from the average value of the reference group. It must be noted that the T-score can predict fracture risk better than the Z-score. A Z-score compares your bone density to the average values for a person of your same age and gender. A low Z-score (below -2.0) is a warning sign that you have less bone mass (and/or may be losing bone more rapidly) than expected for someone your age.

Low bone mineral density - osteopenia or osteoporosis - makes bones weak. 2 scores to help interpret your bone mineral density test: a T score and a Z score.

27 Apr 2009 The Z-score is a comparison of a person's bone density with that of an average person of the same age and sex. Lower scores (more negative)  7 Sep 2017 If your doctor suspects you have osteoporosis, a bone density test can density test results are reported in two numbers: T-score and Z-score. 16 May 2018 Your bone density test results are in, but what do they mean? Start unraveling the numbers and charts by taking a look at two key measures. The test can measure bone density at your hip and lumbar spine. What does the test do? A Z-score compares your bone density to the average bone density of people your own age and gender. For example, if you are a 60-year-old female, a Z-score compares your bone density to the average bone density of 60-year-old females. NOTE: Any post menopausal woman should always request her T-score.

Bone mineral density (BMD) testing is a non-invasive measurement to assess is still being defined, and interpretation of serial studies requires special attention to A Z-score is the number of SDs below or above the mean BMD value for

Learn about osteoporosis bone density testing from the National Osteoporosis Your bone density test result also includes a Z-score that compares your bone

As the chart above shows, a T score of –1.0 is described as osteopenia, and –2.5 is described as osteoporosis — even though bone density bears little relationship to fracture risk (but that’s another story ). In this second chart (below), 68%, or around two-thirds, of the population falls within 1 SD of the mean, bone scan is a nuclear medicine exam that looks for cancer and stress fractures and does not test BMD. The Z-score: The “age-matched” or Z-score compares your BMD to what might be expected in someone your age and body size. Again, the Z-score is in units of standard deviations and shows whether your bones If the Z-score is -0.84 then 20% of people have a lower bone density. Pediatricians use percentiles to interpret the height of a child. A child at the 5th percentile (same as Z-score of -1.65) is short for his or her age, and one at the 75th percentile is somewhat taller than average (Z-score of 0.68). A bone density test determines if you have osteoporosis — a disorder characterized by bones that are more fragile and more likely to break. In the past, osteoporosis would be suspected only after you broke a bone. By that time, however, your bones could be quite weak.

A bone density test is used mainly to diagnose osteopenia and osteoporosis . It is also young adults (your T-score) and age-matched adults (your Z-score). 27 Apr 2009 The Z-score is a comparison of a person's bone density with that of an average person of the same age and sex.
